How I see Nigerian Blogsville (2) – The two clans... not cliques

If you missed my previous post, be sure to read it here, before proceeding. By doing so, you will to appreciate this post better.

Haa, people of blogsville, is if fair? Is this how life is? You people just set me up for failure. You want to become Alakobas of my blogsville career? I see you people like drama too much. When I said there are two clans, I meant proper clans, not cliques, as I suspect most of you are expecting. You all want to put me in trouble, ehn. But read on, the post is still interesting, even if it doesn't cause you to bring out your boxing gloves.

Just imagine a real life community that has two major clans with a wide river separating them, same tribe, same goals, but different kind of structures and houses. That’s how Nigerians that blog on Wordpress and Blogger are on the internet.
So yes, there are two major clans in Nigerian Blogsville. All others are negligible. The blogger clan and Wordpress clan, and they hardly mix.

If you decide to leave your primary family to join the other clan, they will beg you to stay, cajole you, try to convince you. You might give in to their pleas, or decide that you are going, so you leave them your house address in the clan you are migrating to, but the truth is they will hardly come to visit you. And some of them will tell you "we will miss you. Unfortunately, I don’t do wordpress, or I don’t do blogger."

In fact, loads of times, you have to go back to your house in your former clan, and tell your former family that you have something new for them in the new house. Some will come, some won’t.

After a while, you concede defeat and either come back to your former family, or accept that you have lost their affection and stick with your new family.

There are few, like Angels Beauty, Ms Tizzle, etc that cut across both clans, they know how to paddle in that river that separates the two clans, but ask them, it takes serious consistence. Having to cross a river all the time is not beans.

For me, I did not visit Wordpress bloggers in the past because they did not have the Google follow button on their blog gadget, and I couldn’t figure out a way of following them on my blogger dashboard, which is my method of keeping up to date with blogs I follow. Some people have other methods. So I just blanked out Wordpress bloggers. But I later figured out how to add them, so I now cross that river few times, but the truth is that they hardly come to blogger, so I don’t even know most ones that exist. The ones I follow are like Angels Beauty and Ms Tizzle, that try not to limit themselves to any clan.

How do I know blogsville people like to stay in their clan. Apart from the ‘I don’t do Wordpress or blogger’ comments I have seen and dropped, I visited my friend’s wordpress blog when he was campaigning for the Nigerian blog awards. He put up a list of blogs he felt should be nominated in each category. He typed something like ‘For the blog of the year, vote a.wordpress.com, b.wordpress.com, or c.wordpress.com, so he didn’t campaign for any particular blog, as long as it was a, b, or c, he was fine. They were all Wordpress blogs.

So I pinged him, and asked "how come I didn’t see any blogspot blog on this long list of yours?" His response was ‘I hate blogger, I can’t stand it, I don’t visit it.’ And here I was, thinking it was only blogger people that disliked Wordpress people. That’s a classic example of bloggers who will never cross that river for anyone.

So when choosing your clan in this blogsville, choose well, and try to be loyal to one clan, not being from blogger today, and tomorrow, you tell us to follow you to Wordpress. What if you want to have your house in the two clans at the same time? Fine, but as for me, it is just too much stress.

Did you notice the irony? Wordpress bloggers still call themselves bloggers, even though they do not use Blogger, lol. They should call themselves Word-pressers. Sorry, I just had to chip that in.

So this is the end of my ‘How I see Nigerian blogsville’ rant series. I hope you enjoyed it

  8. lol @alakobas...ahahahaa...i was just waiting for you sistah!:D

Yeaah! you took me by surprise....what i had in mind was more of clique thing...you be really 'fight avoider'...ehehehehe.

Now, believe me when i say i didn't know such clans existed! That there is a difference btw the 2?! I simply follow blogs that catch my interest by copying the URL....like Angel...but i noticed that the blogs will just disappear from my blog roll, and i have to start again!Oh my! so there is a DIFFERENCE! Wow! thanks for sharing @tilola..like i always tell you, you are one intelligent babe! Hubby enjoys reading your write-up.

Yeah! what an irony! They hate blogspot but call themselves bloggers??????????......they should be called pressers then! :D
I don't really like the features in word press esp the commenting style....why the funny creatures instead of the person's picture and why must one be on FB or twitter? For instance, i don't get back comments from Angel blog in my gmail, instead it goes to my yahoo which i seldom read! Nor her posts...though i used my gmail address!..Now i understand better.

It is like a man married to 2 wives...so there is the usual, 'i -am- better- than- you and he -loves -me -more- than -you attitude! All for the sake of the man abi?

You know something? this cuts across a broader spectrum than i see.....if we can have 'clan' in the internet as per our writings, then why do we cry foul over tribalism in our country? WE ARE NOT ONE!.......writings that can be read by diverse of people is now kind of put under a 'class-status'.... for instance.....oh..nitty is a blogger...so her writings are not good enough to be read by a presser?.......wow! am still kind of shocked here.....kudos to Angel for the love she shows to we bloggers...thank you sister :D

Now, what is the solution?....can the 2 clans find a common ground?.....can this be done by software guru's?....or bloggers and pressers will continue to live like dog and cat until a 3rd wife comes in, then they will gang up against her?

Weldone @tilola, both posts were a good read. Have a nice week.

You have a point when relating this to life o. People just choose what they like, and that is it. I don't think it is because they don't like the quality of our write-ups, but they just don't like the platform.

Abeg, I doubt there will be common ground o. The peeps involved are competitors, so choose whose side you will be on. As for me, I choose blogger, the community is just too cool for me to run abandon my peeps.

@ Eya: Lol. Let the third wife come, she won't even last one month. These two wives have locked us down real good.

@ angelsbeauty: First go and tell that to your fellow 'word-pressers' Then we would try too.

  15. Not trying to sound like a nerd, Wordpress off better Content Mananagement System (CMS) than Blogger BUT limited plug-ins, add-ons, & comes with 3gb. That was why free wordpress pages look...'Empty'. Blogger was owned by Google & that gives opportunity to add lots of plug-ins, making pages look 'full'.

But, for premium service Wordpress does it better.

I don't care which bloggers use either because I subscribed to their RSS feed, link to their site only to comment.

    1. So why would I them pay for wordpress, when blogger is doing it just fine for me? The goal for me is a blog, not a website naa.

  16. Well,@ilola, you no fall my hand@all. Truly, leaving comments on wordpress can be depressing(pun intended)at times but I have discovered quite a few pressers that write very insightfully too. Pressers like ESCO, Temi of Musings of a Caramel Latte Addict and many others do write well and I visit them, though only in my inbox as I subscribe to receive by email so I do get to word press only that I do not cross the divide as I have Gmail to do that for me. 19. Na wa o! And to think that I was imagining Illuminati tinz as per the clique and clan mentions. Indeed, the divide has always existed but we've just never really paid much attention to it. Blogspot and Wordpress users just seem not to flow with each other as well as fellow blogspot users and fellow Wordpress users do.

I know a lot of Wordpress users. In fact you'll find a good number of them on Naija Stories. They're pretty talented and fun too but I think most of 'em are tight-assed (if you'll excuse my Spanish). Lol. I visit their blogs occasionally and have quite a number of readers from there too. The thing however is they just don't bond as well as those of us on Blogspot do. Besides, I agree with you, Atilola. Blogspot users shoul d be the true bloggers while Wordpress users should call themselves 'Pressers' or 'Wordpresssers'.

However, I agree both clans should find a common ground and I salute MsTizzle, Angel and others who were nice enough to get Julius Berger to construct a bridge to link both worlds. But let's face it, Blogspot remains miles ahead of Wordpress any day. If Blogspot is Victoria Island, Wordpress is Abule Egba! Lol

    ReplyDelete

    1. Illuminati kooo... Yes o, they two clans don't flow. If one doesn't notice at first, then you do later.

Really? You are the second person commenting that wordpress users feel like they are all that o, I really never knew. Yes, I agree that our own community is stronger on this side of the divide.

Abeg, no let dem beat you with this your analogy oo. So we are the tush ones abi? Very cool.

  20. LOL...this analogy is so apt and so true. I never really thought of the fact that the term 'blogger' could be owned by those on blogspot. Now I'm glad I never moved. I actually tried wordpress once though and didn't like some things on there and came back to blogger. Over time I've been on 4 blogging platforms and blogger has outlasted them all...I had problems with the others -> Xanga, Motime and wordpress.

Oh, it looks like I'm a one man army... *jejely wears new cloth and proceeds to climb stage like a gentleman*

*knacks mic and clears throat* Hello there, my fellow bloggers. I speak for the wordpress side of our dearly beloved artform. I think it's sad that you guys cannot see the light. Your platform is clunky and difficult to use. Why do I have to have a blogger account to EASILY post a comment on here? Be doing eyetest for me everytime I want to comment. -____- And have you any idea how hard it was to read your blogposts on my curve2 browser? It was so frustrating that I gave up on it even after I stepped up to an android phone a while ago. You see, it's really pathetic that blogger doesn't have a sensible mobile web platform even at the end of 2012. Neanderthal!

Also, do you know why we don't SEEM to have a community as such on wordpress? Obviously not. Let me help your (for lack of a better word)... ignorance: "Wordpressers" are almost all on twitter as well. That's where we do all the bonding and fighting and camaraderie-ing. You see, we've learned how to work both platforms for optimum exposure and 'benefitability'. WIN-WIN!! So yes, we do bond and fight too, we just keep all that 'pettiness' away from our blogs where we can focus on the actual art of writing/blogging while we keep all our 'silliness' on twitter.

Oh, another thing, I subscribe to a few blogger sites directly through my email... and I receive the posts in my inbox 24hrs later! Like, wharraheck?! Where's the sense in being alerted about a post the day after it was published?! Do you bother with yesterday's newspaper when there's today's to read? Rabbish and nonsense. Mscheeeeeww!!

Abeg, I dey go paddle my kayak go back wordpress jarey. I for done subscribe to comments so that when you people reply me, I can receive it instantly in my inbox but... Oh look, blogger is not that advanced yet. Oh bugger.

ps For those of you so concerned about not having your pictures up on your wordpress comments, if you were any technologically advanced, you'd know that you could use your twitter, facebook or even blogger acct while commenting and your avatar from any of those accts would show up, with the link to that profile attached too.

pps @ilola, I'm incensed that you did not credit me in your post. We are now fighting. I demand an apology and atonement for your sins. 3-|

ppps I bear no grudge towards you blogger bloggers (see how rubbish that sounded?) and your backward ways, the vexed tone of this comment was purely for purposes of mirth. I do not take responsibility for any one of you who do not possess a real sense of humour.
