My first online shopping experience in Nigeria

Source
For the first time in history, I shopped online in Nigeria. On Friday, I decided to carry out a search on google for an affordable dual sim phone I need to use next weekend while I’m away. The search took me to Jumia’s website. So I thought, rather than have my assistant going to computer village next week to haggle over a suitable phone for me, which was the initial plan, I should as well try buying it here.

You see, I am not new to online shopping at all, seeing that I don’t really like physical shopping, and I am not much of a buyer. I usually get a lot of my stuff from amazon.com and .uk, Dorothy perkins, house of fraser online stores. etc. And when I am in Nigeria, if I really need something, I buy from Ali express. All these must qualify as a need for me to even get them since I am not exactly a spender. But online shopping in Nigeria, I have never done it. And I have never seen the need for it, because again… I hardly buy anything.

Also, I am a seller on Jumia and Konga. I’ve been with Jumia for about 3 years now. Let me say our relationship is like a regular healthy marriage. We fight and make up. We’ve had more good times than bad times, and in the end, our relationship is beneficial to both parties.

I think I was more confident to buy on Jumia because I sell on Jumia anyway, and people buy my products, so why shouldn’t I buy there too? Also, I have my own online store, where we make a lot of our sales. So I have no reason on earth to refuse to eat the food I prepare.

Anyway, I gave it a try, and placed my order. I had chosen the standard delivery because the express delivery meant I would get the next day since I ordered after 1pm. The Saturday delivery was too risky for me because I had to leave home by 12noon for a performance. So even though it was compulsory for me to get the phone in a maximum of 4 days, I chose standard delivery, which was promised for delivery of 2-7 working days, and it was cheaper than express delivery.

Since I was a first time buyer, some lady called me one hour later to confirm my seriousness. I confirmed, and told her I needed the phone asap, and explained why I couldn’t use the express delivery. She told me my ordered item was under a delivery of 1-4 days. Anyway, around 7.30am on Saturday, some guy calls me, and asks if he can deliver to me that day, to which I said as long as he makes it before 12 noon.

Lo and behold, by 9am, I got my phone. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased, that I even purposely paid the delivery guy extra. I mean, I ordered the phone past 6pm on Friday, and I chose standard delivery. So that’s how I’d have wasted extra money on express delivery.

Now, I don’t know whether everyone who buys on Jumia has such a pleasant experience. Maybe I was treated with such love and priority because this is my first time, but the stress was taken off me and my assistant completely. I mean, I went on google to search for a phone, and I ended up with a phone in my hand in 15 hours.

Please note, after placing the order on Jumia, I also went to Konga to see if I could get a better deal, but it was more expensive by 5,000 naira, so I didn’t bother. My products on Jumia and Konga cost the same, so I’m covered in that aspect, though I have more products on Konga than Jumia. You can visit my store on Jumia and Konga by clicking here and here.

Will I shop online in Nigeria again? Well, if it is an urgent need, and I get the best deal online, yes I would. If not, well, sayonara.

What of you? Have you shopped online in Nigeria? What was your experience like? Good, like mine, or terrible?

Disclaimer

I was not asked, paid, or cajoled by Jumia or anyone to do this post. In fact, no one or organisation was aware of my intention to do this post. I am just writing my personal experience. Anything that suggests the contrary is a mere coincidence. Thank you.

  1. Good morning, Ilola. I am an aspiring concept creator. I have no experience. Please I want to assist with a Christmas decoration template. I need to build my resume. One has to go to the house to determine the predominant colour or colour accent so it could be matched with the then-decided Christmas colour(s). The format depends on the house.

These are the items for the template:

    (1) Christmas stickers, small, big, etc
    (2) Lights, white, pure colour, multicoloured, scupltured, etc
    (3) Flower wreaths (not only grass green and red) with stunning colours, accessories
    (4) Flowers in vases inspired by Christmas
    (5) Christmas/Christian inspired posters, bedsheets
    (6) Glow center rugs with Christmas pics (to look like an aquarium), ribbons-decorated surfaces
    (7) Table mats with Christmas themes (colour, text, photo, etc)
    (8) Themed (also with the WORD OF GOD) clocks with tunes, table clocks, cushion covers, napkin, tissue, custom-made post-its with home owners' inspired tidbits
    (9) Procurement of themed films, dance videos, Christian-inspired cards, lacy ribbon or paper banners and stickers, pouffe for a central theme for the client's house. Etc.

There would be different templates so they would choose what they want.

I would like to come in by collaborating on the design of the above and adding to my empty CV. Then if I can get some percentage of the consultation fee (only that, not the workmanship or profit from any of the above) e.g. 20 naira per 5000 naira consultation fee. I don't need the money , only experience and any percentage I can get e.g. 20 naira * 100 houses will be going to Old Peoples Home, Yaba or a similar charity. The main purpose is for the WORD to have maximum effect in the houses and lasting impact on lives.

The intention is a form of community (intimate/close) soul-winning, the ONLY essence of Christmas. I would appreciate anyone who can help me add something tangible to build my resume. May GOD help you in advance in JESUS name. My name is Titi (a pseudonym for now) and my e-mail is tundeprofessional@gmail.com.

    Thanks.

  4. Your 'nigerian' online shopping experience was breezy. That's good.

I'm don't do online shopping often but I have shopped..from a number of shops eg konga, jumia ,fashpa, AN, sizzelle....and I haven't had a terrible experience. Seeing as am out of lagos I don't get the speedy delivery like you did but under 7 days my order is delivered.
Sometimes I get free delivery from some private online business owners too.. Sizzelle was headed my way once and offered to bring along my order-delivery free.

but I've once been disappointed in the quality of the product. Tho it wasn't so big a deal.

  5. Ati I have had too much issues with Jumia, I once threatened a friend who works there that i was going to sue them. Is it from the delivery guy's attitude, to the time promised for delivery (i once ordered a perfume that came in over 1 week) or the shoe i got that was poor quality and wrong size. Please don't let me start with my rant. They are okay though....but I won't be using them in a long while.

  6. Ok, my response might be biased because I work with them. There are days when delivery is super fast and there are days when I get frustrated with the delivery process. Online shopping is here to stay for super busy and no time for physical shopping people like us.

  7. I've only used Jumia and Konga. I used Jumia a couple of times but after delivery issues the second time, i wont be using them unless I'm forced to. Konga however, i have used several times. Delivery is fast and prompt and i will continue to use them. I know people complain about both of them, i haven't had issues with Konga so far

  9. I started shopping on Jumia this year and I have been asking myself, what have I been doing all my life? Coming from somebody that won't drop a penny before she feel her item(s). However, I usually pick up my stuff from their pickup station. In that way my conscience is clear just in case I don''t fancy the item.

  12. I have flat out stopped shopping on Jumia. I ordered a hard drive. It wasn't until almost a month later that they called to tell me they had run out. I was a loyal customer till then, but I was incredibly disappointed by that abysmal level of service and I've not been back since. I've not shopped on konga before but I am forever picking up things on dealdey. That's my favourite platform. I've also shopped yanga beauty and iyaoloja for makeup and beauty products. All in all, it's been a pleasant experience shopping online in Nigeria.
