The God of Visas

Source

This article of mine was featured on Information Nigeria some weeks back. I am sure you will enjoy it and have one or two things to comment. Read on...

‘I hope you all brought your International Passports as we announced last week. Everybody, raise your International Passports. Lift it high to the heavens.
I decree and declare that, in Jesus name, your passports will never be denied visa. Favour will accompany your passport wherever it gets to in Jesus name.
You have to be careful of the people you allow to touch your passport. Some of you allow people touch your passports anyhow, not knowing that those people want to draw you back in life. They don’t want you to have the opportunity to travel so that life can be good for you. So they rub fetish things on their hands and touch your passport and that is why you keep getting denied visa.
Now, raise your passport again. I cancel the effects of every negative contact your passport has made. I decree and declare that you will never be denied visa anywhere your passport reaches, in Jesus name.
I challenge you today, after this anointing service, go and apply for that visa. You and all your family. You won’t be denied.’

This is just a brief summary of the exact scenario I witnessed in a church recently.
Is it just me or is there something wrong with this scene? If we don’t think there’s something wrong with it, then maybe we are facing a bigger problem than I envisaged. This is the level of desperation that the Nigerian system has subjected its citizens to. A life where 6 months Visa has now become a prayer point. And when the Visa is obtained, the whole church dances as a show of thanksgiving for 5 minutes. It is not a good sight to behold. This is synonymous to misery. Where going to another man’s land has become the main essence of some people’s Christianity.

At this service, I could see the reactions of the congregation to these prayer points. The zeal was apparent on their faces, as they lifted their passports high. They kept shaking their head and prayed fervently to God to make the ‘impossible to become possible.’
In my own opinion, some people have decided to take advantage of the vulnerability of suffering Nigerians and used it to trivialize the Christian walk. We now conduct International Passport anointing services. The pastor here portrayed the situation like getting out of Nigeria is synonymous to living a better life. It was as if, once you get out of the country, your life will suddenly be better. There was no talk of job opportunities there, no talk of education, nothing. Just get out of Nigeria and you will immediately start walking on streets of gold.

They failed to mention that the reason why some Nigerians are being denied Visas is because they don’t fill their forms accurately. Some don’t have enough means to take care of themselves when they get to this ‘Promised Land’, some don’t even have where to stay when they get there. But we must all try their luck and apply, mustn’t we? Who knows, the anointing might work when they CES officer sees our passport, so he will refuse to check our application and automatically give us Visa to his country. And woe betide us if we are denied, oh well, the witches caused it.

Well, as it is the culture of the average Nigerian to blame someone, I must also look for someone or something to blame for this appalling scenario I witnessed. But who? Is it the government that doesn’t ensure that Nigeria is not a country in which every single citizen is dying to run out of? Is it the pastor that has decided to base his anointing on anointing passports, rather than people? After all, he must make a living. Or is it the desperate citizens that have decided to turn a blind eye to the endless opportunities in this country, even though it seems like we are going down by the minute? Who exactly will my blame wand point to if I spin it? Well, I refuse to spin it for now. After all, the saying goes, it is the instrument of your need that God will use to draw you closer to him. And what is the need for most Nigerians now? Visa to the Promised Land.

  1. I usually don't like such testimonies in my church and don't join in the jubilation either. It was so annoying to me. Until one day, our pastor mentioned it is not going there that is the issue, but looking for job opportunities and doing something worthwhile there, because the streets are not lined with gold. Since then, such testimonies reduced.
Yes! many Nigerians don't fill their forms correctly and they give wrong information. The white man is not stupid!

  2. When i got my 6months visa and the 2years renewal, a family friend was surprised because he had been rejected twice! He was given the 3rd time after an appeal. He has the money, but the embassy found it difficult to believe an individual will have 4milla in his personal savings account...he was advised to separate his company's money from his personal account next time he applies, because the white man knows the value of money and knows how the Nigerian system operates.
No! didn't give any testimony in the church, simply thanked GOD in the privacy of my room.
The desperation is on a high level...because of poverty in the land...the exchange rate and the comfort are the key factors....constant electricity ONLY, is a catalyst to increase people's desire to jet out like the popular Andrew.
    A thought-provoking article.

Yes, the desperation is on a high level, and the bad part is that people don't know what they will go and do there.

  3. True talk...I witnessed a similar incident @ d UK Visa office in VI 1 day i was dere when a Pastor came and approached d security that God spoke to him to go to d UK to minister and he has come to obtain VISA, d security looked puzzled and asked him for d basic document eg passport and visa forms etc...and he said he didnt have and kept emphasizing dat God spoke to him dat if he was allowed into d building he would be able to convince d Britons ...eventually he was politely turned back.... I'll also blame d poor education system dat has made pple gullible to some gospel lies....I m in d UK 4 a short tym and i can tell u life in Nig is beta, cant wait to return home (dats another story 4 another day) both countries require u work very hard to eat, dere is no major diff .....In Nig u can b lazy and still eat but not here

    1. C'mon, now this is the most ridiculous story I have heard. As in... seriously? Even if God spoke to him, can't he just apply, so that the God that spoke to him will make a way? I am embarrassed on his behalf.

  4. I am always worried too when people give such testimonies.I don't even like the idea of it as a prayer point; why not pray for our country to get better...Some people make it seem like ours is a cursed nation and they are praying to get out of the 'bondage'. As in seriously there is a reason why you are Nigerian and God will make sure you have the kind of life He had destined for you wherever you are. People should pray for other things and try to develop a relationship with God instead.
Me, I'm not freaked about getting a visa. If I get it..all good. it's just to go on vacation sef and learn..if i don't, no qualms.
You're right. Those pastors don't even tell them how hard it can be over there and they start resorting to desperate means when they get there, using fake identities and marrying for citizenship..smh
I think the desperate citizens are to blame for not believing

We all have our part to share in the blame. The desperate citizens, the pastors and the government.

  6. Ignorance is very rife in Nigerian society and some of these Pastors exploit this to their advantage. The tragedy of this story and many similar ones is that some people in Nigeria have allowed Christianity to enslave rather than liberate them.

Those who benefit are the pastors who smile to the bank at the expense of gullible followers.

    2. @ Fragile looks: Yes na, using everything as prayer point is not bad. But ignorance is a bad thing

@ Luciano: Some of these things are really as a result of spiritual manipulation, but we shouldn't be over-paranoid. Some of them are just as a result of ignorance

  9. I saw this on Mena's blog and i'll just post the same comment here.
What amuses me is the way people act like the minute you step off the plane into the "promised land" they hand you work permit, keys to a new house, job documents etc like it's automatic "milk and honey" smh

  10. It's kind of funny but that's what happens in this country. I always believe that we like to disturb God too much. We have even neglected worship, we just make requests. Hope for better days!

  12. My people, the grass look greener out there, but dont forget that it was watered by someone/some people, lets water ours pls. Remember that a Lizard in Nigeria does not become a lion in United kingdom or America.

If your pastor prays such prayers, pls change to another church.

    1. Loool, its not my pastor. I had an appointment with someone and had to wait for the service to be over to meet the person.

We should learn to water our own grass.

  13. Well written, thanks dear for sharing. Witnessed a similar prayer session early last year at the Immigration office and was told it's the usual practice there most mornings.
I believe in making a success anywhere you find yourself, you don't have to travel out to achieve that.

  15. LOL, our people sha. The day i will hear this kind of prayer anywhere, I will walk out. What kind of nonsense desperate prayer is that. If you are denied visa, it could be for valid reasons. If amendments are done properly, the person could actually get the visa next time.

  16. Nigerians and religion sha
Its all about demand and supply
Pastors latch onto whatever need people have:

Looking for husband even after sleeping with everyone in Lagos?
Looking for a good wife after impregnating half of Surulere?
Looking for children after twenty abortions?
Good health.....while drinking one bottle of brandy a day?
Safety from armed robbers...even though the person is a kidnapper?
    Pass exam without reading?
    etc etc
There is a pastor somewhere who will deliver
    mmmmmm

  17. Seriously! It beats me. We need 'help' in this country and the church, sorry to say has compounded the problems rather than solve it. I did a poem on religion recently titled 'Mergers and Acquisitions'. It kinda hits back at religious houses and their ineffectiveness in Nigeria today. Maybe i'll send it to you later sha (of course if you ask. lol)

  19. This is both hilarious and sad at the same time. Had I been at this service, an usher would have hauled me out for deliverance cos i sure would have laughed out at this.

Sometimes though, I get sick of hearing how the pastors take advantage of the congregation...I really wish people would make an effort to know God for themselves. Let your descisions be based on your own conviction and not what the man at the pulpit speaks. Search Gods word for yourself as well and then you would know what and who is right and what is not...simple (well maybe not so simple)

Its not so simple. All we have left in this country is hope, and some pastors take hold of that to exploit some people

  26. I have something to say concerning the issue but dont know to compose it. I think its going to be controversial.

    But i will try.

To an extent, I suppose I dont blame anyone for praying such prayer heck I pray on my passport, assignments, projects, etc I just simply pray for favour. I think its the intentions and the attitude we have that I might highlight as an issue. Like you mentioned, some of the pastors should enrich the lives of their congregation in terms of educating them that its not green on the other side.

But niaja sef, who is not tired, who wouldn't want a better life even if its not green its better than living a mediocre life where there is no constant clean water, light, nothing. Government and system have failed us. We are desperate people and we are desperate as a result of what we have come to know with failed promises and exposure from people that have gone abroad and come back living a better life. So we want that life too, little do we know that something has to give. Some of us dont mind giving, as long as we are out of niaj.

To be honest, its very easy to stand and shake our heads at people with prayer points as such but I think God understands the situation and he understand the troubles and issues we face in Nigeria. I think some of us only want God for what he has in store for us. He must be so amuse sometimes, but that humans for u. None is better than the other, we just have a different mindset that all. So am not baffled some people pray as such or intend to. It is what it is.

But a cleaner in the UK might be better off than a clerk or a civil servant in Nigeria...

Do I sound ignorant or arrogant or something else. Maybe, but i am seeing it from a different angle.

    1. So all of us who Naija is not favouring should try and get out or what? In my own opinion. whenever we want to do something, be it visa or whatever, we should pray about it. But that doesn't mean anyone should take advantage of the desperation of Nigerians.

It also doesn't mean that because the government and system has failed us, the only option we have left is to run out of the country. That is why we get treated like thrash at the embassy and entry points, because we are all trying to run out. I am not saying its bad to emigrate, but let it be God leading you, so you don't end up being mediocre in anoda man's land.
