Frank Talk about Mother’s Day craze

Warning: You are likely going to stone my blog page after reading this article, thereby damaging your screen, causing you to hate me for the loss you used your hands to incur. So beware before going ahead to read.

Firstly, let me burst your bubble by saying yesterday, 16th March, 2015, was not Mother's Day. I'm really sorry to break the news this way, but truth is sometimes bitter. Yesterday was Mothering Sunday, celebrated by Catholics in UK and Ireland, not Mother's Day. Anyway, moving on...

I got home from church yesterday, and proceeded to the kitchen to fix a meal for myself. While dicing the carrots, my mother came to the kitchen and said jokingly. “You did not even wish me happy mother’s day.”

I said “Ehen.” In my mind, I was like “you too?” lol. So I said “okay oooo, happy mother’s day.”
I was surprised because I have never said happy mother’s day to my mum. Please, don’t stone me, I promise you, I don’t hate my mum. It’s just that we were not raised with the mother’s day consciousness in my family, thereby causing my surprise.

I am therefore going ahead to blame the whole thing on social media. Lol. Yes, while some people blame Goodluck Jonathan for everything, including the fact that they accidentally cut their thumb in the kitchen, I blame social media for everything.

Ever since social media blew up, during every mother’s day, everyone puts up DP about how their mothers are the best in the world. Mother’s day is now more celebrated than in the past, such that my non-mothers-day-celebrating mother has now bitten the bug.

Back to the conversation. My mother now goes

“Or didn’t you celebrate mother’s day in your church?”

I said “I don’t know, I was with the teenagers all through.” This was not exactly true because I entered the main church briefly, and they asked all women to stand up in church, and sang ‘sweet mother’ for them. Also, in teens church, they asked every female to stand up, and we clapped for them.

“You are even supposed to buy me a gift to celebrate mother’s day.” she continued.

“Really? But you don’t buy me gifts on children’s day.” I said. “Am, I not a child to you? All these mother’s day and all other days are just holidays.” I said, making no sense, but wanting to cover my inadequacies as an inconsiderate daughter.

“But you used to get holidays every children’s day.” she said.

I just looked at her, and said to myself, “see, you don’t get the message. Were you the one giving me the holidays? And really, I meant you don’t give me gifts every children’s day, so why the guilt trip?”

There are just some people who can never be sent on a guilt trip, no matter how hard you try, and I am one of them.

Now, contrary to what you might be thinking, I love my mum. She is really cool, lol. She is so cool that she freezes the sun (no one should steal my punchline, abeg). So let’s get that out of the way. She buys me things, I buy her things – well sometimes. I was just so surprised that the whole social media mother’s day thing got to her.

My mum reads my blog posts. I hope I don’t get into trouble when she reads this one. She might just send me packing, lol. The woman has really tried sha. Having a frank-talk writer, poet and spoken word artist as a daughter is really a burden no mother should bear, lol.

Now in Nigeria, we just like to follow trends blindly. Did you guys notice that last year, when mother’s day was celebrated twice, some people started getting confused, saying “didn’t we celebrate mother’s day few weeks ago?” Well, that is because different countries celebrate mother’s day on different days. Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, United Kingdom, and Nigeria celebrate it fourth Sunday in the lent seasons, and it is called Mothering Sunday. The real Mother’s day, is on 2nd Sunday in May, which more than 60% of the world’s countries, including United States. This is why most times, since we like do follow follow, we celebrate it twice in Nigeria. First we do it with the Catholics because of Social Media following, and then we later do it with the United States. (You can read more about Mothering Sunday and Mother's Day - Google is your friend). Readers are leaders of information and knowledge!

Fact: Do you know that the founder of mother’s day, Anna Jarvis, later in her life started protesting the celebration of mother’s day, becoming a major opponent because she felt it had been commercialised? In fact, she spent all her inheritance and the rest of her life fighting the celebration till she died.

Another thing, how come on mother’s day, everyone’s mother now becomes the best mother. Doesn’t that contradict the meaning of the word ‘best’, seeing that there can be only one ‘best’? Therefore, if everyone’s mother is best, it means no one’s mother is really the best.

Lastly I leave you with this meme I truly love, but did not create. Believe me, I didn’t write it. It goes something like

If everyone’s mother is the best, then who are the witches always flying at night, and doing bad things to other people?

I guess their kids are also out there telling us how their mum is the best mum in the world.

If you made it to the end of this post without breaking your screen, congratulations. But promise me you would not slap me when next you see me in person.

With that said, happy mother’s day Mothering Sunday to all the beautiful mothers and mothers to be out there. And that’s excluding the witches. *Ducks jazz*

  1. Lady Atilola.....you are something else. I somewhat agree with you though, I take the perspective that we should always show our appreciation to our loved ones every opportunity we get in small every day gestures and big gestures once in a while as well. We don't need to wait on a calander appointed day to do this.

    1. Yeah, you are right. It think it is great to set aside a day to celebrate people sha, but that doesn't mean we should commercialise it or excuse ourselves from celebrating them on other days.

  2. Lols the thing confused me last year too. But Catholics in Nigeria did not celebrate mothers day yesterday, I know cos I'm Catholic and I was in church yesterday, it was just regular mass. I think its the Anglicans who celebrate before everyone else.

I sha celebrate all of them, any excuse to have peeps sing sweet mother to me, its a giddy feeling #shinesteeth.

    1. Oh, so did the Catholics in Nigeria refuse to share the same celebration date with those in UK and Ireland this year, cos I know they did so last year. Una don dey rebel, abi? Lol.

  4. I can just see the mothers giving you dirty looks right now. Even the jazz wielding ones. You will need matrix-like skills to dodge the jazz and dirty looks. But wait o. When you become a mother won't all these things shack you?

    1. If they try any nonsense, I will just call my mother for them, lol. That is when they will find out that my mother is indeed the greatest of them all, lol.

I doubt it will shack me, cos you will be surprised at the number of things that don't shack me. For example, I don't like people putting my picture up as DP on my birthday. That is if you even get to know it's my birthday in the first place. Anyway, lemme become a mother first.

  5. Like Lohla said Catholics haven't celebrated their Mothering Sunday yet. Mothers day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in lent in the UK and Ireland, it makes a little sense if we celebrate it on the same day. Anyway why should anyone wait for mothers day to celebrate his/her mother?

    1. Exactly, I don't think anyone should wait till mothers day to celebrate, but that was not the main point of my post.

I wonder while the Nigerian Catholic church didn't join UK and Ireland to celebrate Mothering Sunday this year.

  7. For me, last Sunday was Mothering Sunday... (in the Anglican communion) I don't think the catholics have done theirs yet. I don't/ didn't even know there was a 'general' Mother's day.

I love that meme too! Always make some laugh. But it's true na....are the witches also the world's best mums?

    1. Loooll. Yeah, there's a general Mother's day, founded by Anna Jarvis. How you dey?

  8. Stone you ke? Infact! I am as confused as you are o jare! I don't remember the dates because it is not fixed like Christmas! My mum is Anglican, they celebrated it on Sunday, it's my younger brother who always call me ahead to remind me. Anytime, he forgets, it's in the evening I will remember and call to greet my mum and she will say; nah now you remember, when everibodi don call me early mooin-moin greet me? ahahaha.

Does that mean I don't love my mummy? I certainly do! I simply have a different way of expressing my love for her. And I just don't like following the badwagon! It was from blogs I knew it was mother's day last Sunday sef, my brother forgot to call me o! I quickly called to greet her..ahahaha .

So true about commercializing it! USA mother's day is before thanksgiving, mehn, the advertisements no be for here o! People spend so much for gifts ehen!. Kids will bring cards and flowers they made in school, home, my kids bought me candy the last time. I thanked them, but sincerely speaking it felt just there! I never expects anything from anybody, nor do I give.

Really? The initiator of mother's day fought against it till her death? I always thought it was the catholic church that came up with it to honour women because of Mary...hmm...things I learn...I know..google is my friend right? ahahaha.

I believe mothers should be celebrated everyday in every little ways people can. Like obeying her, helping out with chores without she shouting first, praying for her, support her financially, remember her birthdays, people don't have to break the bank or pretend to love their mothers only on one day! Then the rest 364 days, she is OYO! COME ON! PEOPLE! Action speaks louder than words!

Who are the wicked mother-in-laws and sister-in-laws?
Who are the women that abandon their children?
Who are the women who choose their lovers and husbands over their children well-being?

      AHAHAHAHAHA....abeggy, I no fit shout!
Anyways, happy mothering day to all mothers o, and to your Mama Ailola
So when his father's day coming? Is it universal? I think it is...lemme go and google it out o jare..

    2. Lol. Your mum is a case too? Thank God you called her o. How come your brother forgot to call you this time? Maybe he has given up on you, lol.

The catholic church own is just in some parts of Europe, not worldwide.

Its how everyone's mum is the best that makes me laugh and somewhat cynical. I wish I wasn't that way, but unfortunately, I am.

I used to know much about Father's day too, but I am quite rusty. Lemme gaan refresh my memory.

    3. ahahahaha, yes o, a case like your mum too.... I googled about father's day, not so much fuss about it. Have a nice weekend.

  10. Lol. Don't beat me o. In a previous post, you said you will give me a big hug. Now, it has turned to beating?

You are a real rebel sha. I can't remember when last I put any picture up as DP sef.

  11. Your issue is totally different from mine. It's totally ok if they want to celebrate Mother's Day 10 times in one year,my issue is that they should stop the pretense. How many people actually as much as call their mum on Mother's Day? I'm not even going into buying of gifts. We say sweet things about our mothers on social media, but how many actually get to say those sweet things to their mothers? Today,i'll be like you and blame the social media for the follow-follow syndrome.I didn't call my mother on this Mothering Sunday, she called to ask why and i told her i forgot and added 'sorry ma' to the end of it.End of story.I call my mother often,so if she had gotten upset,i probably would've asked her if she'd prefer that i call her only on Mother's Day and forget about my normal calls to check up on her.

    1. No o, my issue is not the multiple mother's day celebration. If they like, they should do it 50 time, it doesn't take food off my table. One of my issues was the 'my mum is better than yours' pretense. Secondly, I just wanted to rant jare.

Its just a reminder to not take your mother for granted and regardless of the times of trials of patients and tolerance one must be grateful as she will not live forever hence we should stop to appreciate and show the love.

Celebrated here in May. 2nd Sunday.

Mother's day was yesterday for us....the schools have the most fun as the teachers assist them in making cards and writing letters to their mothers.

I think Mother's day should be properly celebrated once every month....really....lol...and everyone should buy presents once every month minimum for their mothers :)

  14. setting a particular day of the year to celebrate anyone/anything (even birthdays) for takes out the inguinity, sincerity and maybe the fun out of the whole thing. A lot of people remember only when they see it on others' profile or in the news - that means 'nada' mhen

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's true o. 95% of people remember these things from their friends' DPs and updates. That's why they don't even know whether it is truly Mother's day or not.

  15. THAT'S YOUR BUSINESS! My mum and mums around me get to be celebrated twice (Nigerian one and American one) and it's just a nice day to shower more attention on them. This doesn't stop us from treating our mothers in between, but don't try to take the fun out of Mothers Day jo.
