"I have decided to stop attending church!"

“All these pastors of nowadays sef, all of they are hypocrites, liars. They only want to collect our money. Last week my pastor bought another car, after he just completed his third house, yet many of the church members are homeless. His children are schooling abroad, yet many of the church members cannot afford school fees. The assistant pastor was just uninstalled after he impregnated the worship leader. I wanted to port to my brother’s church, but a soft-sell magazine published a picture of him in Okija shrine last week. I am fed up. All these pastors are just there to make their own lives better by deceiving members of the church. Even the church members nko? That’s a story for another day. These are the end times, and they are all false prophets. In fact, I am no more attending church. After all, I don’t have to attend church to make heaven… bla bla bla, and some more boring blaaa.”

*Yawns*

Firstly, you agree that you are a Christian, which is why you made these statements above. Who is your God, the pastor or God? Your being a Christian means you are a part of the Kingdom of Christ, right? No matter how you put it, you have a stake in the kingdom.

Imagine you are a part of a company, and some of the managers and even low-level staff have been misbehaving recently, they have been going against company policies. Some have been caught and disgraced, while some have been hiding their acts, but there are snide comments going on about them. On Monday morning, you are still on your bed by 9.00am, then your colleague calls you to ask where you are ‘cause the boss has been fuming about your lateness. Then you tell your colleague you don’t think you will be working anymore because some people have been going against company policies. You are not quitting because of the work, salary or boss’s attitude, but because of your colleagues who are going against the company policies.

Well, that look on your face as you consider the foolish reasons of the worker in question is the same way you should look at yourself if you decide to stop going to church because some pastors and church members are hypocrites, and don’t truly represent the Christ they preach.

YOU are the light of the world. YOU are the salt of the earth. If some people have decided to become rotten eggs, and pollute the work of God, why don’t you be the light you have been called to be, and stand out of the pack. In the body of Christ, everyone should serve in expanding the kingdom one way or the other (not necessarily by being a church worker). If you decide to switch your own light off because someone else is displaying faulty light, you have also contributed to the darkness all around. Why should another person’s light affect your own light?

This indicates the fact that you are going to church to be served, and the moment you found out the people serving you are not really what they portrayed themselves to be, you decide it is time to shift base. If one goes to church to actually serve, then you know that the thought of severing yourself from the body because of the stupidity of other servers will not occur to you, because your own serving has nothing to do with their own serving.

If these are the end times as you say, trust me, a reputable church is where you want to be taking refuge at the moment. As the day goes by, it is getting harder by the day, for Christians to take a stand, so you need to take cover.

The agenda of the devil is to destroy the church (the body, not the building). One of the ways he is trying to do that is to make the church turn against itself. The question is, are you going to help the devil meet this agenda by deserting the church because of what a pastor you trusted did? We all know that when the devil wants to destroy someone, he doesn’t make it very obvious, the first thing he does is to play the isolation card. He isolates you from church, friends, family, etc. and makes you think you can be fine by yourself. By the time problem shows up, you see that you have no covering at all.

If you tell me that you are no more going to church because you are now a Muslim, a Buddhist, atheist, etc. that is a reason that actually makes sense. But to say you will be a Christian, but will dissociate yourself from the church (the body of the one who you claim you serve), because of what some pastors did actually makes no sense at all.

Contrary to what you might think, this is not a post about religion or Christianity. It is more about reasons that make sense or not. And also, I know the truth is that many pastors actually do all sorts, and let power get into their heads. I experienced one of such, and I wrote about it here.

"The reason you have not found any fake thirteen naira note is because there are no originals. No one counterfeits what does not exist. You will find fake hundred naira notes, fake one thousand naira notes, but never a fake three hundred naira note. Any counterfeit you see is evidence that the original exists, even in larger quantities than the fake." (Original quote by Atilola Moronfolu).

The reason there are fake men of God is because there are real men of God. The same way the fake men of God are making you consider leaving the church, let that be the same way the real men of God pull you back to being a strong part of the church.

Instead of us to focus on the fake minority, we can choose to be encouraged by the real men of God out there, and there are still a lot of them.

Drop that attitude about going to church to be served. Go to church, and BE THE LIGHT!

  1. True talk sis. It's amazing to see so called 'christians' disparage the veracity of the gospel just because some pastors have supposedly failed. The irony is in a light bulb refusing to shine because other bulbs are bad. I pray God help us to realize that each and every one of us has a duty to shine. Abeg, make I stop here beforee I begin preach...

  2. I agree with the post especially the last part. However I understand the frustrations that come with sitting under the authority of a man of God whose ways are not very clear. It is frustrating paying my tithe not knowing whether its being put to good use. And on that, well i have decided that i will just obey God and pay,if someone misappropriates it then its between them and God.

    1. You paid the tithe naaa. You did not give it. So why are you frustrated? When you pay something like a bill, you don't go thinking about what the company is using the money for. After all, it is not your money, you PAID it.

My opinion is that if the custodian of the tithe is giving you reason to suspect embezzlement, then it means you are no longer comfortable sitting under the authority of that pastor. Then pay your tithe in a place you feel comfortable about, and don't bother your head again. No need to mentally hold on to what is not yours.

I think your last sentence sums it up pretty well!

  3. Sigh...
First of, comparing office and church is wrong in so many ways. You get paid for going to work. What does one get for going to most churches? Sign Fireman? Okotie? What? So we should continue to get higher levels of grace?
If we are sheep going to the house of God, of what purpose are the shepherds? Read Ezekiel 34 and let me know.
Please also show me where it is stated that we should shine as lights in 'the church' and I will show you where it says that it is better to tie concrete to your neck and be drowned than annoy 'little children'.

Because do not be deceived, the fake men of God are becoming a majority.
This is not something new, it is something that has been on for ages and if people are leaving the church in droves (and they are) rather than blame them for their lack of faith, why not focus on what the real problem is?

I usually avoid commenting on religious posts, cos I get carried away. But then I will say this. The church is far from what it was in Acts of the Apostles. Do not expect the brethren to act like they did in Acts of the Apostles.

Thank God that God hasn't changed. But then maybe he should.

    1. I'm not sure there's anywhere in the post where I mentioned being the light of the church. Be the light, whether in church or the world. If you are light, you are going to be light everywhere, no matter the location.

Also no one is blaming lack of faith as the issue. If that is what you got from this post, then please, read it over again.

No matter how many names you drop, I will differ with you that there are more fake pastors than there are real ones. The are still many faithful ones, but the reason why we don't hear of them is because no one mentions them. Their names won't make the news sensational, because a pastor is supposed to faithful, anyway. But gimme one fake pastor, and the whole world will jump on the story like ant on sugar, thereby magnifying the few fake, and dimmimg the light on the real ones. And then what do we have, a world that thinks all pastors are fake. It is just life.

    2. SNM, I disagree when you say that fake men of God are now becoming the majority! Your numbers are based on the sensationalised ones (like Atilola rightly said).. Who wants to read about good, honest Christians.. Give them a money-embezzling, unfaithfully married Pastor and the news goes viral!
You need to look deeper (infact not too deep) to see that there are so many 'good guys' out there.. So many whose works are not worthy of 'news' because they haven't asked their congregation to eat grass!
I know a LOT of them hence it is very difficult to convince me that the bad ones out-number the good ones!.
And like Atilola said, when all is said and done, run your race.. I absolutely LOVE this article and the analogy of the company! Thanks Atilola. great post

    3. Singlenigerian has a point. Pastors have to be accountable for what they do. Whether they are servants of God or bosses of their own is immaterial. They must be accountable. Their congregation must see to it that they are accountable by leaving the church and/or stripping such pastors of of their status if they mess up. (And 'Touch not my anointed' does not apply). Making pastors accountable for their actions is the only way Christians who tithe faithfully would not be led like lambs to the slaughter. The mentality of hiding one's head in the sand and pretending all is well with such a church will not work o. Sack them and restore some credibility to the church because right now most of these churches are a big joke due to this 'we are being attacked and I will not be moved' mentality. It has got to change or we can just watch the church get smaller and smaller and smaller. And that's the truth right there.

    4. @ 1 + the One: Thanks for echoing my thought. Come and take your kiss, lol.

@ Adura Ojo: The honest truth is that I agree with all you have said 100%. In fact, even more than 100%. If you read the post well, you will agree that this post doesn't look at the pastor angle, but the member angle. All I say is that we as members of the body cannot allow anyone to derail us. The pastors are also members of the body, just like us o

    6. Besides, if you don't make these idiotic/fake pastors accountable, it's an open invitation for more of them to come in and cash in on the lucrative business. Please lets face the facts. It is getting worse and that mentality of just getting on with one's faith and ignoring the obvious is not cutting it. The fake pastors must be kept out of church. Do what needs to be done so it is a deterrent to others thinking of cashing in. and that office/work analogy, Atilola...it is wrong on many levels for reasons given already. How does making a pastor accountable for his destructive actions derail you as a christian, Atilola? Are you saying they should not be accountable because Christians are being 'attacked' - that's a reason often given but it misses the point. My point is that the Church suffers more because Christians are refusing to sanction the obvious and destructive acts of their leaders.

    7. @ Adura: Once again, I agree with you (except the analogy part). Maybe one day, I will do a post on making pastors accountable. But you know I have also done a post about people following pastors, while dropping their common sense in the river, abi. So it is not like I am supporting fake pastors, or asking people to ignore the cancer, and not keep quiet. But I will still do a post on that in future sha.

    1. Both of your statements above are correct. But you do understand that the office point is an analogy right?

And one more thing, being part of the church (the body, not the building) is also a source of livelihood. In fact, the main source.

    2. I knew it was an analogy, hence I pointed it out without going into details for you to see the parallel comparism.... and because the above commentator already explained it out.....I don't want to get too involved with religious issues again because it is a sensitive matter that can make people blood 'boil', if not, I would have written a post-comment as usual @ilola........but from my 2 sentence of comment above, you know I disagree with you..... and between us, if have always agreed to disagree on issues qui? :)

    3. Of course I know you will disagree with me, even before I wrote this post. You have said over and over again that you are giving up on attending church, and I have told you over and over again that not all of them are bad, and that you should keep searching for one that you gel with.

Have you read Transference of Spirit by Late Kenneth Hagins?
Please look for that book and you would understand.

    5. I strongly doubt that Late Kenneth Hagin officially published any book titled Transference of Spirit in all of his 223 books. Well, maybe you are talking about another author.

And yes, I know about Transference of spirits. And no way can that justify completely severing oneself from the body of Christ because of the misbehaviour of some. In fact, no Christian book can justify that.

Abi do all pastors now have evil spirit in them? You have just completely veered off the topic of discussion.

  6. Gbam, Gbammer, Gbammest.... this post makes perfect sense.

We should stop relying on our "Pastor" for validation, he's first and foremost human and so prone to sin just as any you and I.

the bible says we should look unto Jesus, not to any man. It is painful when I hear stories of randy or thieving MOG but that shouldn't make us cut ourselves from the source - Christ.

If you are not comfortable with a church, move, look for somewhere where your spirit agrees with

  7. Atilola!!! My goodness, this is so true! And yesterday's sermon at my church was the WE are Salt and Light in this world! A word in due season indeed.

My favourite quote in this post has to be "If you decide to switch your own light off because someone else is displaying faulty light, you have also contributed to the darkness all around. Why should another person’s light affect your own light?"

Church is like community... God called us to fellowship for a reason.
We should not let someone else's behaviour cause us to misbehave!

  10. Like someone said, it can be frustrating sitting under the authority of a pastor whose ways are "funny". MOG are not sent from heaven to function on earth they are regular human who can also err...but that doesn't mean they should keep on erring. Ourfaith or salvation shouldn't be based on any man,be it pastor or bishop. Salvation is personal.

I pay my tithe because I have read about it in the bible and study the word of God. I know myself if I listen to everything wrong the pastor has done I will become judgemental etc. www.secretlilies.com

  15. THANKS! I personally know this. Anytime, I miss church for a while, I feel cut off. Like cut off from His body/vine. It's a pleasure to see this Holy Ghost-inspired post.

However, sometimes when d pastor is defiled, the whole church is defiled or affected.

I go to RCCG and I use Open Heavens. Daddy G.O. once said that God will always bring out His true children when a pastor is defiled. Will try and check d date.

Also, sis, if we know just a thought can defile, that means except any pastor is constantly repenting, then he is defiled.

Also,if we are cpnstantly repenting. We will miss the gifts for spiritual virgins,or what do you think?
