How I hustled to graduate from University

I recently came across some documents that inspired this post.

If there is someone who was plagued with a curse of missing or miscalculated results, it was me. I was in a department that was full of hustle, but at the same time, understanding. If you did not know how to be proactive, you will be kicked by the wayside.

Right from the day I became an official student of that department, my hustle began. I was a good student, but due to faults that were not mine, my results were not so good until my fifth year.

In my first year, all my GST results were not released. Later, two out of three were released after I got my hustle on. In my third year, the last one was found, but suddenly went missing in my fifth year again. I was so pissed, and started another round of hustle. They had to take the matter to the GST department, where they realized that all these while, my records were in Surveying and Geoinformatics department. For Six whole years. Please, does Surveying and Geoinformatics sound anything like Electrical?

Another one was in my year 5. One of my results was published, and I saw a C there. By year 5, I had sharpened up, and knew that me and C had no business. When I saw C, I wrote another letter, which was forwarded to the lecturer who was very understanding. She looked at it, and saw her error, and upgraded it to B. It was me who still went back to see the reply, and took the reply to my course adviser. I waited till my course adviser corrected it in my front. Yes, I was that persistent.

There was another inter-departmental course I got upgraded from D to B. Imagine D in a four unit course. Awon alakoba.

By the time I was in year 5, my G.Ps which had gone from 2-1 to 2-2, jumped back to 2-1, after  several corrections here and there. I had to hustle from lecturer to HOD to course adviser, scrolling through piles of letters, carrying my letters from place to place, and making sure no one spoilt my hard work. I am sure if I even looked into many more courses, more errors would have been found, but it’s all good. By the time I was in my final semester, I made almost a 5.0 GPA, but years of damage had been done, and I went with my 2-1 (which was partly my fault too).

Below are two documents I found. You can enlarge, and follow through my hustle by starting from number 1, if you are interested, and can survive the interesting handwriting.
By this time, I had almost graduated.
Yet, I was still writing letter for results

Story of how I used almost 5 years
to search for one result.
You will pray to read, pray to pass, pray for papers to be marked accurately, and pray for results not to go missing. I know some people who had to rewrite year 2 or year 3 inter-departmental courses while in year 5, just because the missing results were never found, and they did not want to wait any more, and have extra year.

I am glad I was in a department that actually followed through with complaints of students. I am glad I was in a department that did not take advantage of people in trouble, telling them to drop money or sleep with lecturers. I am glad that I went to a school where handout sales are not the way to passing a course (Handouts are not allowed UNILAG), but still I didn’t have to have a miserable result life in school. My friends never did, it was just me. But Maybe God was using those obstacles to develop other characters in me.

Yes, I learnt hard work, persistence and tenacity, while I was in school, but it didn’t have to be that way at all. Anytime I thought about my pending cases in various departments, my heart leapt. And when 5 years later, I cleared every single problem, I gave a serious testimony.

It is even now sad that the education system is now worse than in my days.

Still, I miss my Electrical days in UNILAG sha. How Odd?

And now that I have hustled to obtain my engineering degree, all I want to be is a 1920s gangster, and blow away people's heads. The pictures below say it all.

  1. LOL. Those pictures are way too cool for a 1920's gangster Electrical Engineering student.
I'm encouraged with this post....having almost the same issue in school, and a lot of prayers going on......i'll definitely scale through and celebrate like you.

    1. If you were going to ask me that kind of question, especially something that is personal, and has nothing to do with this post, you could have sent me an email. At least, my contact is all over this blog.

  3. So sorry to hear. Sounds horrid. And I'd expect better from a prestigious name like Unilag. (PS I used to work there.)
Really somebody should sue for this kind of thing happening, there's no reason why students should be so mistreated.

    1. Really? You used to work there? Interesting.

I must say that my departmental office really did well in sorting out my missing result issues. They addressed my complaints well, even if slowly.

  6. I went to uniben, missing result? Automatic carry over. I never experienced it myself though but it was really disheartening.

    1. Are you serious? They don't even bother looking for it? Abeg, that is nonsense. What if their best graduating student has a missing result in the final year? I bet the whole faculty will search high and low to scoop that result out.

  7. Nice pictures too, you really channelled the 1920s gangster look, did I mention that you were and are very cute

    1. Yes o. A lot of work went into me nailing the 1920s gangster look accurately, right from the fact that they loved striped jackets, to their hats.

Thanks for the compliment. It is really refreshing, especially coming from a lady.

  8. I can relate to this tho. After rounding up an extra semester and staying at home for about 8 months waiting for NYSC, I got a call that they were processing results and mine was incomplete because they couldn't track "a special elective". Now, in OAU, special electives do not add to your result but you must pass at least 12 units of special elective as pre-requisite to graduation. Off to Ife that evening (got in at about 10:00pm) and at the department the next day, the particular elective missing was one I had seen the result earlier and was sure that I passed. When the result couldn't be traced, I went to the coordinating department and they could not find the result for the whole faculty. It seemed like a grand conspiracy against me but after some prayers that same day, I was told not to worry and yes "I hustled to graduate".
By the way, Atilola, you're such a cute gangster *flees*

  14. Hustler l'omo!!!! Lol. Like HoneyDame, this wasn't really my reality, I can however relate. In final year I took a course work based course and like the over-sabi housewife student that I was I finished all course works given within the first few weeks of the course. Mid-way through, the tutor, combined two course works to form one but I had already submitted those and had my registry receipts to prove submission. He agreed that it was fine and I didn't need to retrieve the previously submitted work. Do you know that during the computation of scores, this oaf gave me a D and said I didn't submit one of my course works??? Laziness. I spent the first afternoon looking at my final result crying. The next day, after serious prayer sessions, I called my year tutor, scanned my registry receipts to everybody, including the oga at the top and boarded the train to my Uni, armed with the original receipts. Before the end of that day sha, my scores were upgraded and I graduated with my 2:1. That goat wanted to use his raggea to spoil my shina peters. God pass am!!!

  15. Haha. .See Lola forming Al Capone! Can't imagine a D in a four-unit course. Only TB Joshua would resurrect that GP.
btw. .how did your result get lost, get found and then get missing again?

    1. Loool at TB Joshua. I don't think TB Joshua can resurrect that one.

  17. What! Nigeria diminishes people's potentials. I've never seen a place that can frustrate you to nothing, except you decide to stress over the very little things that normally shouldn't even make you bother at all about
I guess you were lucky or more like brave cause I can see people who prolly settled for extra years they didn't deserve

    1. I agree with your 'diminishing' statement. It is so sad. I saw some teenage entrepreneurs on Forbes today, and my heart broke that the Nigerian situation does not foster innovation in our young ones. Maybe creativity, but not innovation.

As I like to say, don't waste your pain. Learn something from it, and move on.

  20. Missing results happened a lot in my uni. I thank God I didn't have to go through that. Any time we took elective courses we always had to pray and fast that they will at least release our results. I love this picture of yours. And God really did bless your hustle. www.secretlilies.com

  22. Lol do you Al Capone?? Lol!!
We didn't really have missing results issues in my faculty.. It only happens when its a borrowed course from another faculty. I had an experience like that with a year two course and I only got to know about it in year four. Thankfully after somewaka it was sorted out.
