My First Poetry Reading - Myopia

Good day people. Today's post is not one I am really proud to share, but must share all the same. If I knew I was gonna be on camera, I would have composed myself and gesticulated better, instead of standing like a statue. It was my first poetry reading ever. I recited my poem, Myopia. It was on blog last year and generated a lot of comments but it has been taken down.

Apart from my 10 year old birthday video when I was jumping up and down, I have never really watched myself on camera. I don't think I like the way my mouth moves sha, lol. I watched it and was like 'is this how I talk in real life?' I just had to cover my eyes.

This is a poetry reading session is called Loudthotz Poetry reading. It takes place every second Thursday of the month. I attended in January and really loved it, but was too ill to go for February's own. By the grace of God, I won't miss that of march. Join me there, if you can. I believe anyone that writes poems should be there to meet people of like minds. It is organized by Independent Poet Concerns.

Enjoy the video.

  1. That was really good. I wish I had the courage to perform spoken word. It was among my resolutions last year, but I failed to do it.

    1. Really? Thanks for the kind words.
Please, try to learn the art of speaking, it is not as bad as you think.

  2. The poem is really good. I liked the power of your voice, would've wanted more facial and body expression too.

    1. Yea, my voice's power... it can be my undoing at times. I'll add body expression next time.

  3. I'd go with Myne on this one. Facial and body expressions would improve the quality of your reading. Moreover, you could try memorizing the poems too.

    Blessings.

    1. Yes, I saw your comment on fb. I can't memorize it cos some of the poems are so long and also, at most poetry readings, we are asked to read it from the screen so that the audience can follow you

    1. Thanks Ginger. Lighter tone of voice sha... maybe I will try to make sure I am tired before reading next time. This is bcos my excess energy sometimes reflects in the tone of my voice

  9. Lol. Methinks you did pretty good o. Your mouth looked 'okay' to me. lol. Great poem though the body language was a little off. All the same, you try jor! E no easy. I did 'spoken word' once at Anthill 2.0 and I kinda stuttered on my poem. The memory has since had me unwilling to try again but I'm having a rethink now. I'll definitely check out IPC and probably join you in March.

  11. It wasn't as bad as you led us to believe. Public speaking is never easy, believe me. I use to be petrified to speak in front of an audience but I had to fight my demons to overcome it. The more you do it, the better you become. Well done.

  15. E-N-E-R-G-Y! This is the first time I have seen you on video and the tone of your delivery matches the one on your blog. So from now on, with every post you put up, this'll be my mental image ... LOL! You have such a powerful voice and sounded bold. I wish you demonstrated more and moved around too. I enjoyed this though :-)

P.S. For a statue you looked pretty good ... LOL!

  18. I'm sure everyone cringes when they hear their own voice out loud, myself included. I actually am tempted to smash whatever device is playing my voice whenever I hear it...it's that crazy. But anyways, I won't repeat what the others have said...or maybe I will. REALLY IMPRESSIVE!!! Spoken word poetry is something else, and that would require the theatrics most of the time but you're good since this is just a poetry reading.

  19. Love the animation in your voice. Everyone has their own style, jare. I don't think your whole body has to be animated to carry a performance. There's this perception in spoken word performances that one has to be overtly dramatic. Not true.
