I am not one for controversies and try to steer clear of them as much
as I can, both in real life and on the internet (especially on the internet). If I stir up controversy, believe me, it is unintentional, cos I know people sometimes misunderstand me.
However, I decided to quickly insert this post, which has been in my draft for about five months, as a sequel to some people's post, I noticed something on blogger, which I felt led to talk about and I
am very sure many people will agree with me. Mine is a slightly different perspective, so I am not just hammering what they said. Please, read and comment on the following points stated.
I wonder why some bloggers won’t comment
on people’s blogs, yet the opening comment on their posts is how they appreciate
more comments on their blog. If you don’t comment on any other bloggers’ post,
then I think you should be happy when you get a maximum of three comments on
your post, though you have 107 followers. People want to be appreciated too.
Why is it that the only reason why some
people followed others blogs is just so others can follow them back. Once they
follow back, that is the last you hear of them. What makes it worse is that
some of these people actually don’t post interesting stuffs on their blog, but
one might consider it rude to unfollow because they are on one’s followership.
Why don’t some bloggers have the google
follower gadget anymore? Does it have anything to do with google plus. Of
course, this is not a blogtitude problem, I think it’s more out of ignorance. I
have been sure to point it out to new bloggers who had this issue.
When you do any of the first two points above,
and you are not Bella Naija or Linda Ikeji (who actually don’t have to follow
you for you to follow them back), other bloggers might excuse you for a while,
but after a while, they begin to notice your bad blogtitude and it actually
puts them off (believe me, it does, even if they don’t say it). And then
interest in your blog posts drops and you wonder what is happening.
If one wants more comments, then one should comment
on other people’s blogs. One want more interest in one’s blog, then one should show
interests in other people’s blogs. Unless one is really dishing out hot gists
that people can’t resist to comment on, or one is satisfied with having a
followership of 167, with an average of 1.5 comments, then we gotta work on
changing that blogtitude.

I used to feel really bad about not following back blogs that followed me, especially when I can tell that that's the only reason they followed me but I don't want to feel compelled to follow you if I don't like what you're blogging about

I am very guilty of not commenting when I read posts.This is because most of the time, I check on blogs when I am at work or on my phone and I usually intend to think of the comments and write them later. But as a Chief in procrastination, I hardly ever do. Overall, blogtitude has been really bad, I read almost all posts, but never get to comment. I plan and hope it improves pretty soon.

I try to comment as much as possible but I have to be honest and say I avoid viewing blogs when I am busy because I dont want to favour some - to the exclusion of others.
Personally, I am grateful for every comment I get and I really dont mind when people dont comment because I know they might be pressed for time i.e. sneaking in to read blogs while at work OR reading a blog on the go.
I feel reading a blog is quite similar to reading ones favourite newspaper column - you might read it for years before something compels you to write in. I feel not every post will resonate with every reader.

Funny enough, I began following most of the ones on my blogroll because I read comments the blog owner made on someone else's blog, liked what they had to say, visited their blog, 'felt' their kind of writing and then chose to follow. Not sure that they all follow me back and its no big deal. I read Myne's blog from time to time, comment sometimes,not sure she follows mine but she comments on mine sometimes too. I am not in this for follower-ship BUT I truly appreciate all those that find my blog worthy of follower-ship. But what's the point of following if you never come by to visit me after that like you said?
I do believe the best way to get more traffic to your blog is to visit other people's blogs and leave comments. I continue to pray for more go slow on my blog cos I believe my voice must speak, that it has a purpose and my blog is the platform from which that purpose is being fulfilled by the grace of God. So I am more into visitors cos even if you don't leave a comment I am hoping something will speak to them and help them in some way or maybe just make them smile. So I always find time to blog hop and read recent posts of blogs I follow and IF I have something to say, I will say it for as much as I want to increase footfalls on my blog, I shall not be commenting for commenting sake. And leaving 'waka pass' (just know I was here) sort of comments is also not me. Hence my comments tend to be annoyingly long like this one. Lol!
However, when I leave a comment and come back later (cos I do) and you have not responded, it ticks me off but then again, I have come to accept that as part of the whole different strokes for different folks matter. The only person I have control over is moi-meme. Lol! So each one do his/her blog as he/she wants. Just know that, as you have pointed out, unless you are Linda Ikeji, what you do or don't do on other people's blogs will come back to you. Good or bad, abi?
Bottom line, listen to @ilola o! It pays to have a good blogger-attitude oh!
Yeeehh! Really long comment. Before, I used to follow everyone who follows me, but when I realised that I follow loads of people, when anyone follows me, I check their blog, and see the kind of contents they put on. If t doesn't edify me, I don't follow back.

I totally agree with you on all the points you listed. When I was really new to blogsville, I read somewhere about leaving comments on other people's blogs if you want comments to be left on yours and it worked like magic. :-). You and Honeydame were among the first people to comment on my blog and have remained constant and I truly appreciate that. I think I'm guilty of following some blogs back cos they followed me and somehow, don't really comment on them after a while. Sometimes, I get drawn to some particular blogs that I'm used to visiting and I'm sure would always have interesting posts. Other times, I get tired of doing blog rounds and promise to visit those other blogs, but later forget or just generally fashy jare. Oh well, I would have to work on that. Having word verification kini popping out on some blogs also don't help matters. Sometimes, I type the scrawly word verification thingy and my comment would still not be accepted cos I got the word wrong. I just waka if I'm not in the mood to retype the next word that pops up. It also doesn't help when some blogs don't post frequently. It's still not an excuse sha cos I don't post so frequently nowadays. I will try and work on myself, so abeg ehnn my followers, no waka ooo. :-)

The main reason I don't comment is laziness. I tend to procrastinate my comments until one day I just go on a commenting spree all at once.

If people comment or not it doesn't bother me & it shouldn't bother anyone. I do read a lot of blogs & comment only on the ones I have something meaningful to comtribute. And it should be that way.

Interesting perspective Atilola. I have always wondered too. There are some blogs I don't comment on (those are the marriage blogs I follow and most of them are not Nigerians). For the Nigerian blogs I read, I do my best to comment when I have something to say. Having the right blogtitude will sure help Blogsville grow and even more fun.

DeleteI'm with adebsrk on this, I see blogging as a long term affair so when I visit other blogs, I treat them like new friendships, you know how you meet people and you can decide if you'll be seeing them again or not depending on how you get on, while some blogs resonates with me, there are some that I don't find that interesting so I will not comment or follow, the same way I do not expect people who don't find my blog interesting to follow or comment. it's just one of those things I think, you don't like everyone just like everyone do not like you shay...

Followers...as a new blogger, i followed so many blogs and even commented on them several times, but many never returned the gesture. As i grew older, i follow any new blog that comments in my post, but learnt later, as you said, they will stop coming immediately you follow back. When i notice such, i remove them from my blog roll! And i don't rush again to follow blogs UNLESS, i like it and simply copy the URL to read at my leisure, but it will not be in my visible blog roll! afterall, cunning man die, cunning man go bury am abi?..ahahahahah
The goggle follower's gadget...hmmm, me think, some bloggers don't want to know the number of followers so as not to discourage them from writing or other people that might visit the blog or they are writing for their own pleasure and don't care to know who follow them or they don't want to be seen as 'new' which puts people off or some don't even know about it. For instance, only 3 followers for the past 6months, it gives off a kind of 'bad aura-unpopular' but if the number is like 300, wow! it will show the blog is popular, and people like to always belong...Please my assumptions oo, you know say over-sabi nah my problem..ehehehehe.
yes! it baffles me when i will see many followers but the comment so minimal. I came to realized the people don't comment in others because, after several times of commenting in the person's blog without feed back from them in their own blog and in mine, i go just kukuma, arrange myself and waka comot abeg! nah who send me message..ahahahahaha.
ha! the entertainment blogs with the irresistible amebo news, then people go dey form say dem no like gist? abeggyy! The blog gives people chance to say what they want. Such blogs are for money making, so anything is allowed which people like, which increases the rating. if one comments with their blog's name, it might discourage people from visiting their blogs if they don't like their comments. I learnt that the hard way. I now keep my comment to myself and read for pleasure, afterall, the host does not have your time.
Ha! the verification thing, i now agree with sting and DOHK who asked me to remove it from my blog when i came back from my 'break'. That thing is so annoying o! jeez! i thank my commenters who were patient with me before i removed it. I tried 4 times in one blog, that i said to myself not again! shioo!...ahaahahahaha. DeleteI must comment, I unfollowed some people in the past, cos I kept going back to their blog over and over again, but my presence was unacknowledged, not even on their blog. The reason is because I wanted to concentrate on the friendly bloggers, who were even a lot for me, so I didn't want to add too much to my plate.
In addition to all the other comments, I would like to add that sometimes, you don't have the words to express how you feel about a post. It hits all the right spots; it's profound but the words in your head seem so trite...so you don't comment. It feels to you like whatever you say will appear 'cheap' and contrived.

Nice post, though I am late. I think sson after I began blogging, blogtitude began to change as people moved to twitter. Commenting and community was more back then and that was when I imbibed it. It's still hard for me to stop now even though I have so many blogs who comment on mine and I wish to reciprocate. For me, that is the beauty of blogging.

ReplyDeleteI find that I am learning many things from the 'bigger' bloggers like Myne and DNW with whom I have a relationship even though we have NEVER met, not even the DNW who is at my backyard!. I strongly believe in follower-ship being intimate and family-like! We also mustn't fall into the 'deceit' of only commenting on blogs because we crave their comments on ours. The 'relationship' has to be meaningful...I must believe in, have a thought on what I am reading to comment on it. Which is why the reason for being a (public) follower on someone's blog should be well thought out first...I blogged on '(Don't) Rub My Back' a while back..lets not do tit for tat, let our reasons be genuine. I also agree that it is rude to 'un-follow'. There are times I want to hide from someone on twitter and I find it so difficult, and that is from a 'Be Free oh' proponent o. I once accepted a request on twitter because I loved the person's profile, then sent her a direct message to to thank her for following, and to chat about something on her profile we had in common, she never responded, I also RT to her tweets, no response, I unapologetically un-followed, without guilt. Meaningful relationship, meaningful, partout; be it on the internet or in real life situations.
Thanks for this, while I still have 22 followers, a few of them bloggers, I had better learn to well...well done, fellow bloggers!!!

I agree with aloted. I too felt that way. Maybe its my posts, they are not inspiring enough for some readers. But I am grateful to key readers and commentators on my blogs its really encouraging. I remember some bloggers that came to visit during my early days to comment (which I felt were encouraging) and suddenly stopped. Although, I tried commenting on theirs and even asked them why they havnt visited "no answer". I began to realise maybe its all in my head and I should chill.

Perhaps I'm the voice of dissent here, dear Atilola, - I think people should do whatever they feel comfortable with. Life is stressful enough. There are enough rules and conventions to follow in the real world that it might not be fair to expect the same online. Apart from being civil to each other as far as reason, commonsense and decency allows for, I think people should be allowed their freedom to do as they please oh.

But then again getting plenty comments is also about content and marketing. I think if one really wants more comments one should seek a larger audience through other media outlets. eg. Myne, Sisi Yemmie have a good balance of bloggers and non bloggers reading their blog. Great!!

Yes o, there's a very strong blog community amongst Nigerians. It is very real. The more you visit people's blogs, the more they get to know you and interact with you.

ReplyDeleteOn this issue I agree with you but one thing that puts most bloggers off hence their hesitation to comment on other blogs is too much whining without substance. People want to be inspired, people want to laugh and cry with you but only if you actually have information to give.
The only reason I will comment on a blog with a melancholic tone is if some posts resonate with my sufferings at that moment. If I can relate to your rant about exaggerated hamburger billboards my friend I will over-comment! My little cents o! Hehe :)

Well, to add to the 80 something comments already (phew, Attygeh, you wrote about something almost everybody had on their minds but are forming too nice to voice out), my take on it is simply this. Monkey no fine but him mama like am,pardon the vernacular, everybody wants to be appreciated. Its a basic human feeling to have(except you are a weird fellow like me). I started my blog simply because i wanted to have somewhere i could unload my various personae without loosing the basics..

ReplyDeleteI'm sometimes guilty of not making comments,especially when I'm reading out of a small screen and there are times I don't even have time to enter blogger at all. Anyways I'm a student. But when I'm here, I try my best to make comments because I love receiving comments too.
